Why China forsook "Moral Education" at the turn of the Century

Teachings of Confucius had been the mainstay of education in China for thousands of years.

But during the Ching Dynasty, China was unable to defend itself against Japan, Germany, Britain, France, ... because of their vast superiority in Navy, guns.

Also, at that time, many Chinese went overboard to study. What they saw there - the railways, the steamships, the great engineering works, ... astonished them. Hence, when they returned, they all thought that the education of the West were superior. And they all wanted a change.

So when the Nationalist overthrew Ching, (many of the Nationalists were people who had studied abroad), they set up schools along the Western countries, and totally forsook the traditional Chinese style of teaching.

A U-turn of 180o degree.

Nowadays, only the Islamic countries place great emphasize on Moral Education. Moral education is totally abolished in the West.

Let us compare the youths in Islamic countries and the youths in Western countries :

  1. Adultery is rampant among Western youths, and seldom among the Islamic youths.

  2. Drug is also rampant among Western youths, and few, if not none, among the Islamic youths.

  3. Rave parties, totally-unrestrained living, a life totally given to fleshy passions, (and not to the higher pursues of life - kindness, mercy, graciousness, steadfast love ....) is practiced among many Western youths, (unfortunately, the youths in Hong Kong too, because the Educational style in Hong Kong is patterned after the West), but rarely among the Islamic youths.

  4. Throwing stones, destroying properties of others, riots, are common among Western youths, and few (except the people in Palestine) among the Islamic youths.

But alas, the Islamic countries, because they place emphasize on Moral Education like the Ching Dynasty, are as weak as the Chinese during the Ching Dynasty.

LORD places great emphasize on Moral Education, as LORD told the Israelites that one tenth of the population should be teachers of Moral. But LORD also places emphasize on craftsmanship, too :

And Moses said to the people of Israel, "See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahismach of the tribe of Dan. [Ex 35:30-34]

I hope people would study the educational system of the West, as well as those of the Islamic countries (and also that of Ancient China), and devise an educational system that is better than both.

(Personally, I think LORD's system is the best, but we cannot implement LORD's system in Hong Kong today, hence we should first introduce Moral Education in our schools first, using the best moral teachings of our ancestors - those from the Confucius camp, yet consistent with the teachings of LORD and of Jesus).

The fate of youths, of our children, and of our grand children, are in our hands, and we cannot wait - as time passes by quickly, what is a child today will be a youth in a few years time !
